Good Morning Girls Colossians Study – Day 1 & 2

(Good Morning Girls is doing a study on Colossians, which starts today.  Go here for more info.)

Colossians 1:1-8 says (NIV version):

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on ourbehalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.”

Notice that faith and love for others goes hand in hand in this passage.  When you truly grasp the hope that comes from grace “in all its truth”, you will bear fruit, and part of that fruit will be love for one another.  It’s the second greatest commandment, to love others as you love yourself.

But how do we do that?  How can we show love consistently toward other people, some of whom are uncooperative at least some of the time in doing things to make themselves loveable?  How do we bear the fruit of love toward others that is so blatant and obvious that news spreads to far regions, like it travelled from Colosse all the way to a Roman prison that held Paul?

The key is found in the last part of verse 8:

love in the Spirit.

Really, we can’t love each other all the time the way we should without being filled with the Spirit.  Our flesh finds lots of reasons not to love, and frankly with some people you don’t have to look hard.

But when you’re filled with the Spirit, the Spirit bears fruit in and through you and the love for others will be God’s love, not our own.  And His love is unconditional.  His love doesn’t depend on how the person acts, or what they do or don’t do, or how likeable they are.

And aren’t we all so blessed that it doesn’t?  Aren’t we blessed that He loves us no matter what? Because I have my moments (um, ok, days) where you don’t have to look to hard for reasons not to love me.  And considering God knows everything about me, He’s got lots of reasons.

But He loves me anyway.

And with His Spirit, I can love others anyway.

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35
